Double weekend success for United Youth Academy sides

On another glorious sunny day, a number of United Academy sides participated at the annual Magherafelt Sky Blues tournament on Sunday.

The under 13’s and under 9’s had a memorable day, coming home with silverware, the younger sky blue boys winning the plate while the 2003 United group claimed the overall cup with a derby win over Coleraine in the final.

The United under 10’s had a good day themselves, reaching the final only for a narrow defeat but were consoled by a player of the tournament for star turn Abi Sweetlove, the sky blues girl showing her skills once again and adding another award to her collection.

United will have two sides at the Foyle cup this summer at under 12 and under 13 level and the 13’s were able to trial a number of top young players on Sunday, looking forward to the North West youth football festival in July.

United 2002’s, next years under 15’s, are already on the lookout for players and will be holding trials over the next few weeks for the side which will compete in the National League next season.Trials will take place on Wednesday 8th,15th and 22nd June from 7.00-8.30 pm at Wakehurst pitch 6.

In the delightful surroundings of The Eagle restaraunt at Galgorm, United under 16’s held their prizegiving awards last week, guest speaker was senior assistant manager Bryan Mclaughlin and he spoke confidently about the senior clubs new plans for their young players, with four sides involved from under 17 up to the first team.
