Draperstown Celtic kids are off to a flying start

DCFC U15s 6

Bertie Peacocks 1

DRAPERSTOWN Celtic U-15s continued their good start to the season with a second league win in a row at Cahore Park when they overcame Bertie Peacocks U-15s on a score line of 6-1.

The young Celts started well and had the opponents on the back-foot from early on with good flowing moves, and were rewarded mid-way through the half when Faolan McGuigan placed the ball well into the corner of the Coleraine boys net after good approach play by the forward line.

Bertie’s however didn’t lie down and responded some five minutes later when a free-kick lobbed into the Draperstown area wasn’t dealt with and they pounced for the equaliser.

This spurred the home side into action and after good attacks on the opposition’s goal they went ahead 2-1 with a well-executed free-kick from left-back Aaron McBride nestled into the bottom corner. Half-time 2-1 to the home side.

Draperstown started the second-half having to master playing into a stiff breeze, but countered this with some stylish and intricate passing moves.

They quickly added to their total with quick-fire strikes from Eoghan Young and Faolan McGuigan and this give them the confidence to control the rest of the game which was played at a high tempo and some very nice passages of play from the home side.

Highlight of the half was a hat-trick goal from Faolan McGuigan who gave the away defence a torrid time throughout the game.

To top off an impressive day all-round debutant substitute Niall Gallagher slotted in a final sixth goal after a slide rule pass from Eoghan Young.

So a great performance all-round from the young Celts from a defence marshalled by Eamon Conway and Nathan Devlin, midfield controlled by Conor Donnelly and Emmett Duggan to a brilliant display by the strike duo of Faolan McGuigan and Eoghan Young.

So it’s very much a case of keeping our feet on the ground and our heads out of the clouds, with a lot of hard-work still to be done as its very early days and lots of tricky assignments ahead!

DCFC U16s 0

Windmill Stars 1

Draperstown Celtic U16s slumped to a shock defeat on Saturday as they were on the wrong side of a 1-0 score line.

In a game which they dominated they could not seem to get the finishing touch to put the ball in the net. It was a very frustrating game for the spectators with very little in the way of fluent football being played.

The Windmill goal was the result of a penalty 10 mins into the second half. Although DC tried to get the equaliser there were too many players not performing at the usual high standard the DC lads set for themselves. Hopefully this was just an off day and the DC boys get back to winning ways next week with a result against St Marys. They owe it to themselves and their fans

Squad: Conor Gallagher, Conn McElhone, Pearse Grant, Michael Burke, Roddy Mullin, Roghan McCloskey, Odhran McGuigan, , Mark Doole, Peter Lagan, Ronan Murphy, Oran Kelly, Ronan Devlin, Franny Doherty

Next Game – Sat 06TH Oct @ 10.30am: St Marys at Cookstown Fairhill
