Draw a fair outcome

Lurgan Town Mid-Ulster U13’s and derby rivals Sunnyside played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in atrocious weather conditions on Saturday morning.

Lurgan, backed by the strong wind, encamped themselves inside Sunnyside’s half for the opening period and it was no surprise when they moved ahead in the fourth minute. Jack Hogg controlled and turned on the halfway line before accelerating past five defenders and coolly slotting under the keeper for a superb solo effort. Town almost added a second when a Sunnyside fullback had to clear off his own line following an inswinging corner from Ryan Blacoe. They did move further ahead on 12 minutes when Michael Newton’s drilled cross was diverted into his own net by a S defender whilst under.

Lurgan piled on the pressure in search of a third goal - Gareth Ferguson shot just wide of the post on 19 minutes followed by efforts on target from Ben McNally and Cai McDowell. Sunnyside pulled a goal back after 21 minutes in their first attack of real note.

Sunnyside, with the assistance of a now near gale force wind, poured forward in the second half. The equaliser arrived on 38 minutes when their effort went in off Lurgan’s crossbar. It was backs-to-the-wall stuff for the Lurgan boys now with keeper Kacper Sobczak producing a stunning save on 50 minutes and then pushing a long range effort onto his own crossbar to keep the scores level. Lurgan’s hardworking defence , ably assisted by a dogged midfield, held firm to earn a deserved point.

Lurgan: Kacper Sobczak, Adam Hodgkinson, Ryan Blacoe, Andrew Ferguson, Ethan Rice, Gareth Ferguson, Joshua McClune, Ryan Henry, Jack Hogg, Michael Newton, Fionan Dunbar. Subs: Aaron Hancock, Ben McNally, Cai McDowell, Joel Davison.
