Drumahoe pay the penalty

FORGET about Manchester United losing the Premiership title to arch rivals Manchester City thanks to Sergio Aguero’s late winner, the same disappointing feeling happened to Drumahoe, on Saturday.

The Waterside men were a penalty kick away from clinching the Saturday Morning League Championship trophy, however their 2-2 draw with Redstar meant their opponents at the weekend clinched the title by just a point.

However striker Stuart Moore did have the chance to fire home their all important winning goal in the closing stages, but his late spot-kick was saved by Declan Meenan.

For manager Terry Martin he was extremely disappointed that his side failed to clinch the title, in the cruellest possible manner.

“I’m sick as a parrot, we are still going up, but we would have liked to have went up as champions,” admitted a dejected Martin.

“Even in the first half we had three goal mouth chances and missed a penalty, you can’t miss penalties.

“We also gave away a couple of bad goals, which was disappointing but we have to move on.”

The Waterside man is already planning ahead for next season and believes he will have to add a few players to strengthen the squad.

“I definitely feel it’s going to be a big challenge for us; I don’t think this squad is strong enough to compete at the higher level, so it’s up to us to try and attract a few players and strengthen this team up, in certain areas.

“I must have seven or eight boys in the squad who are 20-years-old or under, so it’s a challenge for them if they want to develop as footballers.

“Junior football is not the most exciting thing at the minute, but I think we are playing in the highest standard of junior football that there is in the area, now that we have gone up.”

Martin feels, like Manchester United, his side will need to come back stronger if they want to do well in the Saturday Morning League Premiership next season.

“It’s my job to pick the players up from Saturday’s disappointment and although we are all low at the minute, because the title was so close for us, football is all about bouncing back.”
