Duke double helps push Rectory towards title

Celtic arrived in Brownstown Park in pursuit of the league leaders but Tony Bell’s team came out on top at the close of play thanks to Willie Duke’s double.

Duke pushed his tally for the season to 32 goals by finding the net in each half.

Duke broke the deadlock with a lead Rangers managed to enjoy until the break.

It was 1-1 as Celtic gained a boost for some slick pressure but Duke grabbed the glory to help Rangers finish in front.

“It was a tough, tough match against a good Celtic side,” said Tony Bell, the Rectory manager. “Willie has been excellent and to score 32 goals is an outstanding returns, especially for someone who is just 23 years old.

“Willie is a work-in-progress but has so much pace and can boast a great run of form, something like 17 goals in the past 18 appearances.

“I signed Willie at Broomhill and he managed to adjust to that level then settled into the Rectory side.

“It was a win which has put us in the driving seat for the title but with still work to do overall.

“Over time, thanks to hard work from the players, we have been able to tighten everything up at the back.

“We can also boast plenty of goals in the side so that is a positive combination.

“We have been very consistent in the league overall but must keep our focus and continue to work together.

“The players have put so much into the season.”
