Eligibility row could give Coleraine a Cup reprieve

Times Sport understands officials in the local game are currently investigating the eligibility of Warrenpoint Town striker Darren Forsyth.

Rumours started circulating on Saturday Forsyth may not be eligible to play for the border club as it is the third team he has represented this season.

Under Fifa rules a player maye only play in a competitive game for a maximum of two teams in one season.

Forsyth though has already played for both Glenavon and Warrenpoint in the Irish League this term, but crucially he played in several games for Leinster Senior League side Greystones before joining the Lurgan Blues in September.

Forsyth came on as a substitute in Warrenpoint’s Irish Cup win over the Bannsiders and has also featured in a number of their league games in January.

If it is proven that Forsyth was indeed ineligible it could have big implications both in the league and cup with Warrenpoint due to play Linfield in the Irish Cup this Saturday.

Officials will be looking to resolve the matter as soon as possible which could mean a cup reprieve for the Bannsiders.

Club officials though are remaining tight lipped on the situation at present as the investigation gets underway. It will be a case of wait and see until a ruling is made and what the impact of that means for the clubs involved.
