Ballynure Old Boys’ ace striker Daniel Ellis is the Ballymena and Provincial League’s Intermediate Division top scorer.

With nine league goals from his side’s eight games played, he tops the goalscoring charts - just one ahead of the Newtowne’s Logue brothers, Ryan and Conor. Daniel’s strike partner Ricky Higgins is in the league’s top six with four.

Last season Ballynure’s front pairing of Higgins and Ronnie Burns were among the most potent strike forces in the Intermediate Division, and their goals went a long way towards securing the league title along with the Crawford and McReynolds cups.

Ronnie’s enforced premature retirement left a gap up front, but manager Gary Burns swooped to reel in Ellis who had been with Islandmagee, after starting his career with Ballyclare Comrades Reserves.

Since coming to Ballynure, Ellis has linked up perfectly with Higgins to pose problems for defences and at the half-way stage the villagers are on course to retain their title.

Last season Burns’ lads failed to make it a clean sweep of the trophies on offer with the O’Gorman Cup escaping their clutches. The bad news for opponents is they are targeting it this season, after being knocked out of the Crawford Cup.

There were no goals for Ballynure at the weekend when their O’Gorman Cup clash with Rathcoole at The Diamond was postponed because of a bereavement in the Rathcoole camp.

Ballynure’s next outing will be on Saturday, January 2.
