End of the cup road for Carniny U-14s and U-17s

Once again the bad weather conditions denied three teams from playing last weekend but any joy for the clubs teams were down to the opposite end of the scales with a newly formed Under 10 team claiming a win in their first game in the NWCDYL.

Due to the weather the Under 8s and 9s missed out playing in the Small Sided Games Centres with cancellations at Ballymena Showgrounds on Friday night and Saturday morning. However the FDC continued on Saturday afternoon at an indoor venue.

The weekend also saw the club continue with an IFA level one course organised for their youth team players who are keen to start out on their coaching careers with the club only too happy to provide the funding and opportunity for the young lads.

UNDER-10

Carniny Youth 1, Ballymoney United YA 6: A very sluggish start for the Carniny Youth boys on a very cold morning in Coleraine against a strong Ballymoney Academy side.

Ballymoney were quick to get on the scoring line to make it one nil, only five minutes into the game. C McCorriston was kept busy in nets and made some great saves when there was an abundance of Ballymoney corners. Twenty minutes in and Ballymoney made it two nil.

Carniny as a team started to fight back and with only two minutes to go before the half time whistle was blown McPeake made a great run up the pitch from his own half to get the Carniny boys a much needed goal

Carniny started the second half more determined with both T.Wylie and Bell having a chance at goal. Unfortunately Carniny were unable to keep possession of the ball and even though the defensive trio of Brogan, J.Wylie and Young were working hard they were unable to stop Ballymoney scoring four more goals.

Carniny Colts 2, Ballycastle Utd 0: This week Carniny Under 10’s took two teams to the NWCDYL for the first time and saw the Carniny Colts secure a 2-0 win against Ballycastle.

This was close match with both teams battling hard to score the first goal of the match with Carniny having a few shots at goal within the first five minutes. These however were well saved by the Ballycastle keeper.

The first half continued to see the Carniny Colts play strong and dominate the game, and saw some great shots at goal by both teams. Luke O’Loan helped keep the nil-nil score by demonstrating great keeper skills.

The second half saw the boys pick up the pace and determination to win provided some great shots at goal by B Donaghy, and Z McKendry. Sixteen minutes into the second half Carniny were rewarded for their hard work with a great goal by C Clarke.

Minutes later, determined to keep the lead R Clarke took control of the ball, driving it up the pitch to B Donaghy who narrowly missed out on the second goal of the match.

After 19 minutes the Carniny Colts were awarded a free kick which saw R Clarke step up to the mark and score a great goal bringing the score to 2-0.

All the boys played brilliantly in poor weather conditions and were delighted with their well-deserved win in their first game together.

UNDER-14

Carniny Youth 0, Dungannon United Youth 2: The draw in the NIBFA cup was a tough one against fellow National League premier side Dungannon but Carniny were determined to win this one with the winner meeting Linfield in the next round.

The first have was very even. McNicholl pushed a Dungannon shot onto the bar and Scullion was unlucky when he hit the post. The half finished 0-0.

The second half was much the same as the first with both defences in top form. It looked like the match was going to go to extra time when Dungannon scored with only 10 minutes left. Carniny pushed for an equaliser with efforts from Scullion and Anderson but were then caught on the break. A late penalty flattered Dungannon’s score line. Game ended 2-0. Carniny now get Linfield in the league and hope to continue their good league form and move up the table.

UNDER-17

Carniny Youth 1, Loughside Boys 3: Carniny found themselves two goals down within the first fifteen minutes of this NIBFA game and seemed to be having difficulties with the transition from playing on 3G surfaces every week to grass.

The second quarter of this game saw Carniny improve and pulled a goal back when Peter Rankin evaded several tackles to produce a crisp finish. H-T 2-1.

In the second half Carniny tried to get back in the game but were thwarted by good defending and the Loughside goalkeeper who was having an inspired game. The game turned when Peter Rankin was through one on one with the goalkeeper who deliberately handled his shot outside of his area but the referee gave a free kick and a yellow card when Carniny felt the keeper should have been shown a red.

This decision came back to haunt Carniny as the goalkeeper then produced two excellent stops to deny Peter Rankin. As Carniny pushed looking for the equaliser they were punished when Loughside scored their third to run out 3-1 winners.

UNDER-19

Carniny Youth 0, Dundela 3: Carniny travelled to Wilgar Park to take on Dundela and were once again victims of their own misfortune with basic defensive errors seeing them concede two goals in the first 20 minutes giving them an uphill struggle.

With 12 minutes gone a mix up on the Carniny right saw a Dundela striker gifted space which he accepted with glee to give his side an early lead. Carniny were finding it hard to settle and on 20 minutes went further behind when the Duns left winger outpaced Shannon in goal for Carniny to slip the ball home to make it 2-0 for the home side. Carniny did have chances in the first half with Godfrey and Agnew testing the home keeper.

The second half saw Carniny change formation somewhat and Jaworski, Hagan and Calderwood seemed to be getting Carniny more into the game although real goal scoring chances were few and far between. All it took was a goal to throw Carniny a lifeline but it was not to be and a third by Dundela after the hour put them in a commanding position. With 25 minutes remaining Carniny were reduced to 10 men after they had a player dismissed for a second bookable offence but if anything this seemed to lift the Ballymena ‘reds’ who played some of their best football of the game
