Murphy, a central defender or central midfielder is the first signing to join the local club in the transfer window and made his debut, coming off the bench during Saturday’s relieving 3-1 victory over Coagh United.

“John’s originally from Banbridge although he now lives in Portadown,” said Town boss Ryan Watson.

“I’ve watched him over the past 10 years playing in the Mid Ulster leagues for Seapatrick and other teams and he’s a player I’ve always thought could give it a go at a higher level.

“He is physically strong and he’s got a great left peg too.

“That physicality is something we need in this division.”

Watson is still on the hunt, as reported in last week’s LEADER, for more experience to add to what is a young Banbridge Town squad.

“We’re in the same as we were last week really,” he said. “There’s a few boys are thinking things over so I’ll make a few more phone calls this week to see where a few people are standing at the minute and we’ll see what we can do.”
