Fans keen for swift solution to striker issue

Murray - who has returned seven goals in 18 Danske Bank Premiership starting appearances - was prevented from a summer switch by the Ports due to an inability to reinvest any financial rewards.

A switch in the situation for the January transfer window opened up the opportunity for Murray to make his move away from Shamrock Park and Portadown benefit from cash plus the prospect of fresh faces within the budget cap limitations.

The majority of supporters met Murray’s transfer request last week with an acceptance that the time has come for the striker to exit.

“He’s a very good player but if he doesn’t want to play for Portadown I would let him go,” said Terence Pentland. “We want to get a deal done quickly for the good of the club and get money but also players that can help us for the rest of the season.

“The Irish Cup is our only chance for a trophy.

“If anyone puts on a Portadown jersey and wants to play then I support him but any player, no matter who, that doesn’t want to play then I would let him go.”

The prospect of a cash injection led to a debate over a short-term boost or long-term rebuilding process.

“The club have not officially confirmed it but it seems pretty obvious Ronnie McFall will be moving on in the summer,” said Johnny Dunlop. “So I don’t see the point in giving the current manager money to spend now when he may sign someone the next boss does not want at the club.

“It is best to get the money in then save it for the next manager.

“I don’t think there has been a better time for any of the youth to step up and cement a place in the squad.

“The recent statement by the Board of Directors regarding a lack of funds in January showed we will be more reliant than ever on youth.

“Players like Marcio Soares, Matthew Parker, Jake Richardson, Jordan Lyttle and Christian Stewart are our future come August so bedding in now can only help.”
