Ferguson praise for 17-year-old United keeper

GLENN Ferguson praised the efforts of rookie keeper Macauley Cairns after the 17-year-old made his Ballymena United debut in Saturday’s 3-2 win at Lisburn Distillery.

The Broughshane teenager, who has established himself as first choice keeper in Clifford Adams’ reserve side, made the step up to senior level to replace the unavailable Dwayne Nelson.

“Dwayne had a pre-arranged agreement with Roy Walker which I had to stand by but I had said some time ago that I was going to give the lad at least a half to get a look at him.

“He got more than a half and he enjoyed it and we’ve come out on the right end of the result.

“He looked a bit shaky at the start but he played himself into it and made a great save when Jordan Hughes tried to go around him. He almost saved Distillery’s penalty as well,” added Ferguson.
