Failure to win the last three games before the Danske Bank Premiership ‘split’ – the first of them at home to Glentoran this Saturday (3pm) – and by huge winning margins, will consign the Sky Blues to the bottom half of the table for a fifth consecutive season.

“Top six is all but gone but we have set ourselves a target of beating last year’s points tally,” said Ferguson.

“We got 50 points last year which was the most Ballymena has got in the Premier League so we want to try and get better than that again.

“If we beat that, that’s progression and we’ve also won a trophy.

“It’s possible that we could get more points than last year but still finish a position lower in the table but we’ll just have to see how it pans out.”

Ferguson will also use the remaining weeks of the season to fine-tune his squad with next season in mind.

“Dwayne Nelson and Aaron Stewart have been offered new contracts and are thinking them over.

“There are a few more - I need to speak to Mark Surgenor again – but we will have to look at the budget we have and obviously we would like to bring a few fresh faces in.

“We want to have a bit of continuity but at the same time it’s always good to freshen the squad up as well.

“There might be two, three or four go in the summer and maybe get two or three in and take it from there,” added Ferguson.
