Five star United cruise to win

Newbuildings United Res...(2) 5

Hay (32); Glenn (38 & 86); McIvor (52 & PEN 60)

West Bann...(0) 0

A slick display from Newbuildings United Reserves saw them cruise past West Bann and book their place in the Matt Morrison North West Junior Cup second round.

Played in tough conditions goals from Jason Hay, Gregory McIvor (2) and Wayne Glenn (2) were enough to see them overcome a disappointing Coleraine out-fit.

A defensive mistake on three minutes nearly saw the visitors take an early lead, but United keeper Thomas Thompson got back in time to clear the ball off the line.

The home side went close to opening the scoring soon after but McIvor’s close range header was easily gathered by Niall Clarke.

On 20 minutes United should have had a penalty after some neat play by Mark Olphert.

The left-winger skipped away from James Boyd before being clearly brought down by centre-back Lee Brown, but referee David McLaughlin incredibly gave a free-kick to the visitors and cautioned the United winger.

The deadlock was broken on 32 minutes when McIvor’s free-kick from the left found Hay at the back post and he made no mistake heading home past the despairing dive of Clarke.

A super move on 38 minutes saw the Waterside men double their lead.

Olphert cut in from the left before feeding striker Craig Culbert and he got his head up and passed to Warren Wylie who in turn cut the ball back to an unmarked Glenn and he side footed home from close range.

It didn’t take Glen Wallace’s side long to add a third, this time after some smart refereeing by McLaughlin.

The man in the middle allowed good advantage to McIvor, who broke through a few challenges before feinting to shoot which left keeper Clarke on his back-side and he calmly chipped home.

On the hour mark McLaughlin was in the thick of the action again when he rightfully pointed to the spot after Glenn was brought down inside the area and McIvor calmly placed the resulting spot-kick into Clarke’s bottom right hand corner.

Credit to the visitors despite trailing 4-0 they never gave up and on 71 minutes they were inches away from pulling one back when Richard Walker’s 20 yard drive was superbly tipped onto the bar by the alert Thompson.

The scoring was complete four minutes from time when a clever pass by Culbert released Glenn, who after breaking the offside trap, coolly lobbed the stranded Clarke.
