Football: Cookstown Youth's O'Neill and Megarry hit braces at MUSA against Remo

The home side took the lead in the two minutes when Johnny O’Neill drilled a sublime 30 yards pass from the left wing that found Barrie Kelly and Kelly took one touch on the edge of the box and curled and wonderful shot into the top corner for 1-0.

Cookstown continued to dominate with Mark Larmour causing havoc with the Remo back line. Larmour should have added to the score on 8 and 16 minutes but the Remo keeper pulled of two good saves.

The home team when two up on 20 minutes when Danny McElhatton unleashed a thunderous shot from 20 yards out that the keeper could only parry and it was Mark Megarry who pounced on the ball first to score from five yards out for 2-0.

The home team were well on top at this stage with the midfield duo of Johnny McKenna and Danny McElhatton bossing the centre of the park.

It was soon 3-0 as Megarry provided the pass for O’Neill to show the two young strikers how to finish from inside the box and, on 40 minutes, after a good run and pass from Larmour, O’Neill got his second with another good finish for 4-0.

Right on the blow of half time Mark Larmour picked the ball up 25 yards out from his on goal and when on a great run but his attempted chip had the advancing keeper well beaten but it went just wide of the post.

The home side were quickest out of the box in the second half. McKenna picked out a great run from full back John Scott whose cross picked out Megarry at the back post. This time the big forward made no mistake to put his side 5-0 up.

The away team continued with their long ball game and the was easily dealt with by the centre half paring of Steven McElhatton and George Dardis.

On 60 minutes Glasgow and McMenemy were introduced for the hard working McKenna and Megarry. O’Neill had a shot saved by the keeper and Larmour was having one of those days when the keeper pulled another save of from the young forward from 10 yards out.

Remo had a spell with the ball and should have scored on 78 minutes but Luke Donaghy pulled off a good save. They did pull a goal back a few minutes later when their left winger cut into the box and hit a shot from 16 yards out that looked to go right through Donaghy.

McMenemy hit the outside of the post and, in the last 10 minutes, Larmour was again one on one with the keeper only to see his attempt saved. O’Neill had the last chance of the match but again found the Remo ‘keeper in no mood to let in any further goals.
