FOOTBALL: Free weekend proves costly for Ballynure Old Boys

Ballynure Old Boys' free weekend cost them dearly, with the former Ballymena Intermediate Division leaders dropping to third place.

Main rivals, Newtowne took the opportunity to cement their number-one spot with a whopping 5-0 romp against Rathcoole. That huge win leaves them five points ahead of Gary Burns’ lads, who have played one game fewer.

Magherafelt Sky Blues enhanced their podium finish hopes with a 1-0 win against Chimney Corner, and the three points moved them into second spot.

“Newtowne being five points ahead of us isn’t a major concern,” Burns told the Times.

“First of all we have a game in hand, and secondly they have to come to us for the return fixture. We fancy our chances of sending them packing empty-handed from Mossley. They beat us 4-2 in Limavady, so if we could reverse that result, our back-to-back title aims would be back on track,” he added.

This Saturday, the ‘Nure lads will be off to The Diamond for a league clash with Rathcoole.
