Football: Larmour on top form as Cookstown Youth go into second place

Cookstown Youth made the journey to the coast to play Larne Olympic in a top of the table clash.

Both teams are pushing for promotion and still have the possibility to win the league.

Cookstown opened the scoring in the first five minutes. Speedster Larmour opened up on the right wing and whipped in a cross and there was goal predator Megarry to side foot the ball into the Larne net.

The Larne defence were finding it hard to contain the pace of Larmour and the young man was upended just outside the box by the centre half. From the resulting free kick Kelly shot over the bar. McKenna and Megarry also went close.

On the 30th minute Larmour claimed one of the goals of the season. O’Neill flicked the ball on to Larmour and from 35 yards the winger hit a ball that screamed into the top corner of the goal.

A cross into the Larne box was handled and the referee pointed to the spot. Steven McEllhatton fluffed the chance. Soon afterwards John Scott found himself in the box and from a yard out he hit the ball over the bar when it seemed easier to score.

The second half started with the Larne side pressing the Cookstown defence, but on 50 minutes Larmour skipped past a defender and was again upended in the box. This time O’Neill stepped up to take the penalty and coolly hit the ball high into the roof of the net.

Larmour was at it again soon afterwards when he broke down the left flank and put in a cross which was met by Barrie Kelly. He unleashed a shot which rattled the back of the Larne net to make the score 4-0 to the visitors.

Larne did get back into the game when a long ball into the box caught McEllhatton in goal out and the ball sailed into the net to everyone’s surprise.

This win moves Cookstown up into automatic promotion place and a great chance of winning the league.

This Saturday, Cookstown travel to Threemilewater to play Remo with a 2pm kick off.

Killymoon’s final game of the season takes place this Saturday 30th April when they play Brantwood at the Sports Arena in Cookstown. Kick off is at 2pm.
