Four star United win

NEWBUILDINGS UNITED laboured to their third win-a-row with a 4-2 home victory over North West neighbours Roe Rovers.

The home side started on the front foot dominating possession and Trevor McSparron, Curry and Wallace causing problems for the home defence.

It was Wallace who opened the scoring when a corner from the right saw him get the vital touch from close range to steer the ball home.

United continued to put the visitors under pressure and Wallace almost grabbed his second of the game when well positioned 15 yards he sent in a shot which crashed off the crossbar and away to safety.

McSparron also had a chance when he was played through but his angled shot was straight at the keeper. The same player had another good chance when he volleyed over from 12 yards out.

Newbuilidngs were made to pay for their wasted chances and Roe Rovers drew level when a headed back pass fell short and the Adam Barr got there before the Newbuildings keeper, touching it past him, and colliding with the home side number one resulting in the referee pointing to the spot. This was coolly dispatched by Barr.

United almost went in front soon after when another corner saw Wallace but his header was cleared off the line with the keeper beaten.

Curry made it 2-1 to the home side when Buchanan made a good run down the left, cut inside and squared the ball to Curry who fired in a left foot shot from the edge of the box which flew into the corner of the net.

Rovers almost equalised when Caolin Travers’ shot from outside the box, which had Thornton beaten, hit the bar and rebounded to safety.

The second half proved to be a scrappy affair with Newbuildings struggling to get their passing game going.

The Waterside men extended their lead when again from a corner Wallace rose and headed home from eight yards.

Shortly after United made it 4-1 when good work from Gary Thompson saw him release McSparron whose goal ward shot took a slight deflection and nestled in the back of the Rovers net.

Newbuildings had another great chance when Curry sent in a great cross from the right for the onrushing Mark Olphert who headed over from close range with the goal at his mercy.

The Limavady men pulled a goal back when a ball played through saw the United defence appeal for offside but to their amazement and everybody else’s the referee waved play on and Conor Mullan squared the ball to his Barr who dispatched his fifth goal in three games.

Utd travel to Mountjoy next week and know they will have to raise their game if they are to continue their winning start to the season. While Rovers travel to Magherafelt Sky Blues in the Craig Cup preliminary round.
