‘Friendly’ win over Swifts for Desert

GARETH Pitts had his first taste of management when his team Desertmartin entertained Dungannon Swifts Reserves at Dromore Park on Saturday.

Playing on a good surface both teams produced good attacking football but it was the Desert who came out on top winning 2-0.

Desertmartin fielding several new faces took time to settle. Richard Ferson and Willie Watson caused Swifts problems down the right and only good goalkeeping by Johnny Curran kept efforts from Robin Patton and Mark Shiels at bay.

On the 35th minute the Desert got on the scoreline when Mark Shiels unleashed an unstoppable shot from the edge of the area giving Curran no chance.

Patton hit the bar and just before half time Davie Nelson produced a good save to deny Swifts an equaliser.

Desertmartin made several changes after the interval but with Davie Junkin marshalling his defence well and Darren Scott, Adrian Thompson and Chris Morrow pulling the strings in midfield the Desert kept up the tempo.

Patton hit the woodwork for the second time before Thompson put the match out of reach for the visitors with a good strike from 12 yards into the roof of the net.

After the match Dungannon Swifts manager Trevor Douglas paid tribute to both sets of players for their entertaining football, sportsmanship and as a token of friendship between the two clubs presented Valerie Cross with a nice bouquet of flowers.

Desertmartin’s pre season friendies continnue on Thursday July 19 against Limavady FC at Dromore Park, kick off 7.30pm.
