Gers boss will ring the changes

After the gruelling Irish Cup win over Institute, Carrick manager Gary Haveron will be making a fair sprinkling of changes for Saturday’s trip to the heart of mid-Ulster for the Intermediate Cup clash with Dollingstown.

But the Rangers boss is going to take his time to see exactly who is fit and available for yet another knockout clash before he finalises his team selection.

“It’s going to be a bit of wait-and-see after an exhausting 120 minutes against Institute, so there are a whole lot over options which will need to he considered,” he said.

“Conor McCloskey probably should not have started on Saturday but he did it for me. He was almost hobbling about on one leg for 50 minutes. He has calf and groin strains, but I think he will be serving a suspension anyway.

“We needed him last weekend because we were without Ciaran Donaghy who was sick and Aaron Smyth, the best right-back in the country, was also missing.

“But I was always going to be continuing with my policy of giving players match time in the Intermediate Cup. They deserve it and we have a lot of matches still to play this season and we need to rotate the line-ups.

“Dollingstown are a good progressive Championship Two side with lots of resources and some experienced players and we will be getting the lowdown on them from Limavady who played them on Saturday,” revealed Haveron, who always believed they would win Saturday’s Irish Cup tie - even with time running out.

“I was annoyed that we had missed opportunitues to go in front early doors, Kyle Cherry and Miguel Chines missing great chances. I was almost kicking myself.

“But I put Anto Lagan on after going behind and asked him to do what he has done so often - and he delivered.

“Then I believed our fitness would tell in extra-time and Miguel did the business with a stunning lob and we got the insurance goal from the predatory Adam Dick.

“Brian Neeson, who made crucial save at a crucial moment, deserves a mention - but it was a terrific team performance and a great day for Carrick Rangers,” added the delighted manager.
