GIMME FIVE: Ports hit Chimney Corner for five in convincing display

Gary Taylor’s side put in a pleasing display at Allen Park on Saturday to run out 5-1 winners against basement battlers Chimney Corner.

Defender John Neill opened the scoring before Gary Quinn made it 2-0, as Portstewart played some good passing football. Confidence was high and they looked like they were in control of the tie as the first half concluded.

Ryan Doherty grabbed the third for Portstewart, before Chrissie McElroy scored Corner’s only goal.

It with a fine individual effort by the Corner forward, but the game was long since lost at that stage.

Nigel Turner grabbed two quick goals taking his tally to four in two games, to make the score 5-1.

A fine run by Owen Moody saw Dean Murray heading home, but the unlucky mid-fielder didn’t get his name on the score sheet as the referee had blown the final whistle.

Taylor was full of praise for his young guns: “It was a very pleasing display against a very physical side. They actually had two men sent off, but credit to our boys, we kept our cool and played some good football.”

With eleven players in Saturday’s squad under the age of 25, Taylor said he is pleased with the direction of his team: “ We are a young squad, and the boys are working really well together.

“We had four very good players on the bench - Owen Moody, Markus Condren, Danny Austin and Adam Campbell, players that would otherwise get a place in the starting eleven, it’s great to be able to bring players like this on should you need to change to a game,”

Portstewart entertain Killymoon Rangers this Saturday, and Taylor is expecting more of the same from his side: “I’ll take another good showing from our boys.

“Killymoon are down the league table, but they have been scoring plenty of goals, I think if we take the same approach as we have been doing to games then we can take something from the game.”
