WAKEHURST 0

Glebe Rangers picked up their first three points of the season with this hard-won victory over Ballymena-based Wakehurst on Saturday afternoon to move off the foot of the table.

Lining up along familiar lines Glebe demonstrated a welcome resilience as they withstood an early onslaught before emerging victorious.

Wakehurst were in the ascendancy from kick-off and Conor Gregg struck the woodwork with a free-kick after only four minutes. This signalled a spell of fine attacking play from the visitors in which Conor Gregg and Jason Paul figured prominently.

Brian Kane was called into action after Nicholl was harshly adjudged to have passed back to his keeper but the home keeper produced a fine save before Glebe finally cleared after an almighty goal-mouth scramble.

Kane was then called into action to deny Paul on 14 minutes before the hosts took the lead against the run of play. Tommy Elder demonstrated fine control and awareness to find the onrushing Henry who produced a lovely dinked finish over the advancing Maybin.

Wakehurst responded and struck the woodwork with another free-kick from Gregg before Kane yet again came to the rescue when Paul was played in by Gregg. Failure to press home their advantage cost Wakehurst dear when Peter Kennoway typically soared highest of all to nod home a Marks free-kick after 27 minutes.

Lee McCaughern was next to be foiled by that man Kane before Glebe struck a decisive blow in the 38th minute. Again it was the Elder/Henry combination repeating itself as Henry notched his second of the afternoon to leave the half-time score 3-nil to Glebe.

Three goals to the good,

Glebe confirmed their new-found confidence in the second half with Marks catching the eye as he produced a couple of driving runs from midfield. However Elder was unable to capitalise and it was left to Shepherd to preserve his team’s clean sheet with a goal line clearance from Ryan Gregg.

The wide-man made amends after 70 minutes when his inviting free-kick was headed powerfully home by Aaron Wilkinson.

With the points safe Glebe began to create further chances and Maybin saved well from Henry and Elder. Wakehurst’s misery was completed when Paul Muir received his second yellow of the afternoon and his marching orders after a clash with Elder in the 87th minute. Thereafter Glebe created further chances but Elder and Marks were unable to take advantage to leave the final score 4-nil.
