Glebe hit the goal trail again

HIGH-scoring Glebe grabbed another valuable three points to keep in touch with the pacesetters in Belfast Telegraph Championship Two.

This success against bottom placed Killymoon means Glebe sit five points behind league leaders Knockbreda on 28 points.

The visitors to the Joey Dunlop Centre were Killymoon as Glebe Rangers sought to build on last week’s excellent victory over Armagh. A couple of changes to the home starting eleven saw the injured McLaughlin and Marks replaced by Alan Sheppard and Gareth Henry.

Glebe were first out of the blocks and the home side controlled the opening period without creating any real clear-cut chances until the 17th minute when good work by Henry left Elder clear inside the box. However Millar was able to block the striker’s effort.

The visitors were on the back foot for the majority of the half but Kane was called into action when he reacted smartly to stop a Fumard shot after good work from the impressive Barrie Kelly.

Elder was a constant threat from the right flank producing a series of dangerous centres and it was from this source that Henry blazed over in the 20th minute when it really should have been one nil to Glebe.

However the opener was only delayed by a couple of minutes as Ian Parkhill latched on to a Shepherd through ball and cut inside before beating Brown with a well-placed low drive.

Parkhill should have made it two shortly after, but sliced his effort past the post when well-placed. Elder and Parkhill combined well again on the half hour mark and only sterling defensive work by McElhatton prevented another goal.

This proved to be the last opening of the half and the interval arrived with Glebe one goal to the good.

Killymoon opened strongly in the second period and Fumard nodded wide from Millar’s cross. Glebe responded and Henry brought a fine save from Brown after neat play good skill from Parkhill.

As in the first half, good chances were at a premium, and it took until the 65th minute before either goal was threatened again. This time it was the versatile David McVicker, operating in midfield, who broke through the visitor’s fence evaded a last-ditch challenge and slotted past Brown to give Glebe some breathing space.

Killymoon missed a great opportunity to reduce the deficit in the 73rd minute but Campbell failed to take advantage when Millar’s free-kick eluded the home defence and Kennoway made them pay shortly after when he rose unchallenged to nod home Elder’s corner.

The last 10 minutes saw further Glebe chances but Brown saved from Kennoway and Elder before Elder broke away in the last minute to lash home after a fine through ball by Parkhill.
