Glebe upbeat after impressive draw

Glebe Rangers go into this Saturday’s league tie full of confidence following an impressive result at the weekend.

Glebe recorded a 1-1 draw away to Dergview but manager Peter Cairns feels his side could have bagged all three points.

Rangers had been out of league action for around three weeks and were boosted by the timely break which let injured players recover.

As a result Cairns was able to select from a full squad for the first time in his managerial reign and was glad to see the return of club captain Ryan Marks and Tommy and Ryan Elder.

Glebe, second bottom in the Championship One, take on Institute at the Riada on Saturday as they bid to stage an incredible escape from the drop zone.

Cairns feels it is not mission impossible but was slightly disappointed that his side did not get the win.

He said: “Three points on Saturday would have been massive because teams around us dropped points.

“We still have to play Limavady and they are the team closest to us. I said to the boys on Saturday that we’ve got a point against Newry and got a point against Dergview, so it shows that if you go to their home ground and stick it to them we can definitely try and get something from our home matches.

“Institute is going to be a tough game, they are an ex-Premiership side, (but) we kind of fancy ourselves against any side.”

Glebe took the lead on Saturday in the 18th minute following a mistake in the home defence.

Ryan Marks flicked on a throw-in which the defender tried to play back to the keeper. However Tommy Elder raced in to smash the ball home from 12 yards.

Elder then had another chance in the second half to double Glebe’s lead but fired into the side netting when he could have squared the ball or even gone down under a heavy challenge.

Glebe tried to catch their hosts on the counter attack and resisted any attacks.

However they could not do anything to stop a stunning equaliser.

Substitute Duwayne McManus fired in a half volley that gave visiting goalkeeper Brian Kane no chance. McManus’s strike inevitably led to a late onslaught on the visiting goal with Nathan Cashel having a shot blocked on the line.
