Glens are 'Toran apart by Northend

WITH almost all Northend United Youth teams returning to winning ways, pride of place this week again goes to the U14 team, who defeated current Irish Premier League giants Glentoran's U14 team 1-0 in the NIBFA Cup.

The Northend U10 team reached their first final of the season when they beat Ballysillan Youth 3-0 in the BEAYIL Cup semi final.

The U11 team gave a master class in finishing when they defeated Chimney Corner 8-0, while the Antrim side gained a modicum of revenge at under-12 level by beating Northend 6-2.

Northend United 0, Ballysillan Youth 3: After a cagey first half, Northend went ahead when Matthew Irwin kept pressure on Ballysillan's centre half, who was forced into a wayward back pass which was too wide for his goalkeeper, and the ball rolled into the corner of the net.

The second goal came shortly afterwards when Cory Little burst clear from the halfway line, held off two challenges, side footed past the 'keeper via the inside of the post.

The third came from a corner which was only half cleared to Matthew Irwin on the edge of the box, and he struck through a crowded goalmouth to make it 3-0 and wrap up a place in the final against Barn United. MOM: Kieran O'Boyle and Tarlagh MaCrory

A long-range effort restored Barn's lead but Northend equalised before the break when Jamie Brown beat the keeper with a dipping shot.

Northend went in front for the first time when Jamie Spiers' right-wing cross was converted by Mulholland and the Ballymena boys wasted a chance to extend that lead when Dylan Hamill dragged a penalty kick wide of the post.

That gave Barn renewed hoped and they equalised before Michael Laverty – who had only come on as a sub a few minutes earlier – grabbed what proved to be the winner. MOM: Matthew Mulholland
