Goals, snow and a win for Drumahoe

ENTERTAINING football, goals and fine goalkeeping were served up in this enthralling game.

The game narrowly avoided cancellation but fortunately the referee decided to allow play to go ahead at the last minute. End to end, free flowing football was the result in a good win for Drumahoe.

The Drums started the brighter, taking control of the game without really threatening the Magee goal.

"ith 15 minutes gone Duffy broke into the Drumahoe box and McDermott mistimed his tackle. The referee had no hesitation in awarding the penalty. Up stepped Divin who had an excellent strike saved brilliantly by Mitchell. This sparked the Drums into life and Ross and Wilson went close.

On the half hour King won the ball 30 yards out, broke through a couple of challenges and rifled in a 20 yarder off the crossbar. Drumahoe took the lead. The Drums should have increased their lead at this stage as they had control of the game.

With half time approaching Magee equalised through Stephens, capitalising on Drumahoe's inability to deal with a corner.

The second half was wide open with play flowing from end to end. Mitchell pulled off a fantastic save to deny Magee. A tremendous strike from 20 yards was unbelievably pulled out of the top corner by Mitchell with the ball actually behind him.

Ross came into the game and tortured the Magee defence. His good work eventually gained Drumahoe a penalty which King stepped up and stuck away. Hamilton broke away for the Drums and pulled his shot wide when he should have done better.

Miller came on for Drumahoe and almost made an immediate impact with a long mazy run but just lost control at the last minute.

Magee drove forward in search of the equaliser and forced Mitchell in the Drumahoe goal to make to more memorable saves, diving full stretch to his right and finger tipping round the post. Devine broke out of defence and sent a 30 yarder which brought an excellent save from the Magee keeper.

With Drumahoe on the attack once again and the snow falling heavily the ref blew the final whistle. Drumahoe were the victors. Special mention must be given to Jonny Mitchell in the Drumahoe goal for pulling off four outstanding saves.

Both teams and the referee should be commended for serving up such a fine game on a difficult pitch.
