Golfer Drew tees off with £1000 Sports Bond jackpot

Over the years at Linfield and Ballymena Sports Bond promoter Brian Thompson has handed over many jackpots.

However, Brian said this week he got an even greater thrill when the jackpot winner came on screen.

The jackpot winner this week has been a Ballymena supporter all his life, he has been a Sports Bond direct payer since the promotion started, he is known for his charity work, he is known for his golfing skills throughout the world as he has been visually impaired since his teenage years.

He is an enigma, he is Andrew (Drew) Cochrane. On Saturday he was presented in the Boardroom with his £1000 cheque by Glenavon Chairman Adrian Teer (see picture) . On Sunday Drew flew out to Manchester to travel to the Forest Pines Golf Club near Scunthorpe to take part in the British Blind Golf Championships, a competition Drew was runner up in 2010. On Monday and Tuesday Drew will try to go one better.

A nice end to the tale, on Saturday evening while on a collection run Brian called with Sam Browne of Broughshane, also a keen golfer, Sam related how he once bought Drew’s clubs!

In the major £50 section a first £50 win for John Perry (A3578) on the agency of Maurice Anderson. John is Maurice’s uncle and has been a member since Maurice became an agent. This was Maurice’s third £50 winner in each of the last 3 weeks.

Nathan Gilmore whose agency is increasing rapidly due to direct canvassing had a £50 major winner with Rebecca Dalton (A3299), this is Rebecca’s second major win of the year.

Also a second win of the year for James Hamill (B7620), James had a £50 win at the end of last season and now this Ballymena Utd supporter has started the season with a £50 win. James is a member of P Thompson’s agency who also had two £10 minor winners this week.

Frankie McClean (A4210) in his first week as a member and Lynn Montgomery (A0715) a previous £50 winner. The remaining £10 minor winner was Ann Service (C3466) on the agency of Andrew Boyd.
