Good news as Glenavonmake inroads on losses

Shareholders and season-ticket holders at Glenavon’s AGM on Monday night were told the club’s losses in the last financial year were £29,000, a substantial improvement on £58,000 the previous year, £73,000 the year before and £100,000 of three seasons ago.

Financial director Frazer Follis revealed the club hopes be in a profitable position next year. Season tickets will also be held at their current price for the fifth successive season while the club is also introducing a student ticket, priced at £70. All 11 of the Glenavon Board of Directors were re-elected at the AGM with no new nominations received. The office bearers of Adrian Teer as chairman, Trevor Harper as vice-chairman and Mr Follis as financial director were also re-elected to their positions.

Former Linfield, Donegal Celtic and Larne goalkeeper Brian Neeson has joined Glenavon. Neeson has recently been concentrating on gaelic football, playing as a forward for Antrim, but has taken the chance to get back into soccer. “Brian helped Paul (Millar) out at Larne whenever his keeper was injured and Paul speaks very highly of him,” said boss Gary Hamilton. “It’s his attitude that has impressed me the most. We explained the financial situation but he said it’s not about the money. He just wants to get back into soccer and to prove himself.”

Glenavon’s pre-season fixtures will all take place away from Mourneview Park as the club’s home surface won’t be ready until the league season begins on August 10. The highlight is a trip to Bohemians on Saturday, July 27.

They kick-off on Saturday, July 6 at PSNI before visits to Dromara and Loughgall the following Tuesday and Wednesday, Downshire YM on Saturday 13 before Coagh United and Lisburn Distillery on the following Tuesday and Wednesday respectively. On Tuesday , July 23 they play Lurgan Celtic before taking on Knockbreda Parish a day later, H&W Welders (July 31), Carrick Rangers (August 3) and Dollingstown (August 7).
