Greacen next toleave Brandywell

WITH the news that midfielder Gareth McGlynn is leaving Derry City, another man who won’t be returning to the Brandywell next season is defender Stewart Greacen.

The big centre-back, who was the supporters ‘Player of the Year’ last year, has agreed to sign for Irish League kingpins Glentoran.

Greacen, who also admits that a number of other clubs from the League of Ireland were talking to him, is expected to sign for the Scott Young’s side in the next 48 hours.

“I have agreed everything in principle with Glentoran and I hope to get everything signed in the next 48 hours,” explained Greacen.

“They (Glentoran) have agreed that I can train over here in Scotland and come in for the games and to be honest that played a big part in me signing for them.

“Sometimes it’s not always about football and the move to Glentoran suits me and my family best.”

The 29-year-old had an exceptional season with the Candy Stripes and he admits he’s a little disappointed not to be returning.

“Last year was my best season ever in football, I really enjoyed it, the supporters were great, Stephen (Kenny), Declan (Devine) and the players were super and I enjoyed every minute of it, but as I have said sometimes it’s not always about football and that’s why I have decided to sign for Glentoran.

“Obviously with the financial situation at Derry and with Stephen not getting his budget yet, it has been hard for him to re-sign players, but I was a little disappointed the way things have dragged on not just towards the end of the season, but even three or four weeks ago, there were other clubs talking to me then and I still had not got an offer from Derry.”
