Gregg upbeat despite defeat

INSTITUTE manager John Gregg wasn't too disheartened following his side's Ladbrokes.com Championship opening day defeat at Bangor, on Saturday.

The Coleraine man is hoping his young side can learn from their mistakes, which they made at Clandeboye Park at the weekend, and also be more clinical in front of goal.

"We had four 17 year olds and four 18 year olds in the starting line-up, apart from OG (Ogilby), (Alan) Ryan and Conor Lynch. And for the first 35 minutes I was delighted with our performance," he said.

"We missed six or seven good chances; we moved the ball well and looked sharp. But with a young side, when you give a bad goal away then it's hard to get back into a game; and we gave Rory Hamill too much time, which was fatal.

"But that is what we have to learn from. We have a bunch of great young players with real talent for example Joe McCready who is being tracked by three or four clubs in England."

The 'Stute gaffer also conceded that despite having a small budget he believes that the teenagers will upset a few experienced sides throughout the season.

"Our team has been put together on 400, but with that young team I have I think that we will scare a few teams this season.

"The problem with youngsters is that they can go nervey when they go a goal down, and they can be physically intimidated.

"To be fair to Bangor, I thought they were very much on top in the second half, and the early third goal killed us off.

"It was hard to get the players lifted after that goal just a minute into the second half, but we can take plenty of positives out of the performance," concluded Gregg.
