Hammond heroics can’t save Scarva from defeat

LURGAN INSTITUTE 1

SCARVA RANGERS O

Scarva’s journey to Lurgan on Saturday ended in a narrow defeat, despite a positive display by goalkeeper Alan Hammond.

The goal that decided the game arrived in the opening 45 minutes. Scarva keeper Alan Hammond did well to reach a misjudged back pass but the hosts were quickest to the loose ball and fired into the Rangers net.

Scarva were unable to make anything of good crosses into the Lurgan Institute penalty area from Ryan Dodds and William Morrison.

When Dean McCammon raced clear of the home defence, he was stopped in his tracks by the half-time whistle.

Early in the second-half, a Stephen Hendron header was cleared off the Lurgan side’s goal-line and later in the half, Hendron forced the Institute keeper to make an important save.

A free-kick from Wes Baird, awarded for a foul on McCammon, was then cleared off the line.

That’s not to say that it was all one way traffic and Alan Hammond saved impressively on more than one occasion as Lurgan Institute looked to extend their lead.

The best for Scarva Rangers on the day was Hammond himself for that string of saves.
