HE’S STEVIE

Banbridge Town will look to their top scorer, Stephen O’Neill, to keep them on top of Championship 2.

The striker has found the net nine times in his last nine games, including a brace in their 3-2 win on Saturday past against Chimney Corner.

O’Neil’s goals will prove crucial as Town travel on Saturday to face a difficult game against league newcomers Newington YC who are certainly making their mark and sit just behind Town in third position.

The game will be played on the 3G surface at Seaview as Newington currently groundshare with Premiership outfit Crusaders.

But that should prove to be no problem for the locals, especially when you consider that they train on the plastic surface at Cheney Park and that six of the teams currently playing in Championship 2 play on it.

It will be remembered that they defeated Glentoran in an Irish Cup Tie at the Oval a few seasons ago.

This will a real test for Town but one that Ryan’s men will look forward to with a great degree of confidence in their current form.

Town have now won six of their last seven games with only three defeats so far, coming against Sport and Leisure Swifts in the league, Ballinamallard in the League Cup and Annagh United in the Bob Radcliffe Cup.

Unfortunately they will be without Stephen Greene (suspended) and the unavailable Mark Teggart but this team has proved it can overcome adversity.

Supporters have been encouraged in recent weeks by this team’s style of football and they will be hoping that this spell at the top of the table can continue a little longer.
