The talented 29-year-old, who wasn’t offered a new contract with City, has thought to have turned down a number of clubs to join the Oriel Park men.

Former Candystripes boss Stephen Kenny held talks with Higgins last week and while the Limavady man also held talks with Linfield, Glentoran and Coleraine, he is believed to have opted to sign for Dundalk.

Higgins, who admitted he was gutted to have left the Brandywell, will now be focused on trying to do well for The Lilywhites.

“There has been a wee bit of interest but I sort of had it in my mind I wanted to stay with Derry and I probably thought that was going to happen, but obviously it hasn’t.

“Now I have to look onwards and upwards and it has actually made me very, very hungry to go and prove a point,” Higgins told Sentinel Sport in December.

The former Bohemians man will come up against his old club on Monday, April 7, when Roddy Collins’ men visit Oriel Park.
