Historic clean sweep for Alpha

For the first time in the club’s 50 year history, Alpha Badminton Club completed a clean sweep of the Ulster Open titles.

Not only that, but all the beaten finalists were from the Lisburn club as well as the winners.

Star man Tony Stephenson won the Mens Singles and Doubles, along with Tony Murphy, title while his little sister Alannah claimed the Ladies Singles.

Sinead Chambers and Caroline Black lifted the Ladies Doubles while Ryan Stewart and Keady Smith won the Mixed Doubles.

“It’s a great achievement for the club,” said Tony Stephenson.

“It’s the fourth time I won the singles tournament and the second time Tony and I have won the doubles.”

Stephenson already has his eyes fixed on the Commonwealth Games, where the NI team will be made up wholly of Alpha players.

“We have one more international tournament before selection,” he said.

“I went to the last Commonwealth games in India which was a brilliant experience. I played well and got a couple of good results. I got through to the last 32 in the singles and I’d like to get through to the last 16 or even push it to the last eight.”
