Home to Welders in Irish Cup

GLENAVON have been drawn at home to Harland and Wolff Welders in the fifth round of the Irish Cup.

The Championship One side are currently sitting in mid-table in the country’s second tier and travel to take on the Blues on Saturday 12th January.

The Welders have former Glenavon trio Jonny Magee, Nathan McConnell and Davey Larmour in their ranks along with former Lisburn Distillery pair Mark Cooling and Paul Muir. Blues’ boss Gary Hamilton is wary of the threat of their experienced squad. “In cup competitions you just want a home draw,” he said.

“The only draw we really didn’t want was away to Cliftonville or Crusaders.

“We’re happy with that but we have to show the right attitude and be professional in this game.

“The Welders have got a lot of ex-Premier League players and a lot of experience. On their day, they’ll be able to cause an upset.

“Hopefully we can get a good result though and get our names into the hat for the next round.”
