Institute book place into next round

A hat-trick from Garbhan Friel and fellow strike partner Paul Smith netted a brace, as Kevin Deery got his first win in senior football as a manager.

The Drumahoe club gave a debut to new signing Ciaron Harkin, the former Derry City youngster going straight into the heart of the midfield.

Stute went close to breaking the deadlock after just 89 seconds when a quick break ended with Jordan Armstrong feeding Smith, but his low drive from 20 yards, which Michael Magill beaten, clipped the post.

The woodwork came to the home side’s rescue on five minutes when Kevin Lynch’s shot, which had Stute keeper Michael Lynch scrambling, rattled the crossbar.

Institute took the lead on 15 minutes following a superb three man move.

Goalkeeper Lynch played a tremendous 50 pass to Smith, who showed super control before skipping away from Stephen Tully and putting in a inch perfect cross for Friel to head home past Magill.

Institute doubled their advantage on 18 minutes when Gareth Brown broke the offside trap before toe poking the ball past an out-rushing Magill and as the ball was rolling over the line, Smith blasted home.

This tie was over as a contest on 28 minutes when Friel fired home his second for the night from the penalty spot, after Ryan McAuley had hauled Stephen O’Donnell to the ground inside the box.

Ten minutes later the home side scored a fourth when Smith blasted home from 20 yards after the visitor’s failed to clear their lines.

The Swifts pulled one back on 58 minutes when Darryl McDermott’s poor attempt at a back header to Lynch fell well short and Padraig McKissock nipped in to round the out-rushing keeper and side footed home into the empty net.

Swifts incredibly scored a second in bizarre fashion on 67 minutes as James Daly’s in-swinging corner from the right caught out Lynch and somehow ended up in the net.

Friel completed his hat-trick on 79 minutes easily turning the ball home from close range, after Smith created the clear cut chance.

Referee Stephen Wallace produced two red cards on 86 minutes after substitute Ryan Morrow’s robust tackle on Pierce Tully, lead to the big striker retaliating, meaning the Waterside official had to send-off both players.
