Institute: United secure easy derby North West Senior Cup win

Despite the visitors being a division above them, the Roesiders were the better side throughout the game and could have won by a bigger margin.

The worrying thing for Stute will be their lack of threat up front as they struggled to create many meaningful opportunities.

Both teams ended up with ten men as well with Jamie Dunn and Gerard Logue both picking up two yellow cards.

Bryan McClelland opened the scoring with the aid of a deflection plus Cathair Friel’s seventh and eighth goals of the season were enough to book a place with Coleraine in the final.

In just the first minute the hosts were on the attack; Friel robbed the fullback, crossing for Stephen Duffy but his control let him down at the vital moment.

Marty Gallagher in the visitor’s goal was tested moments later as he denied Friel who was also under pressure from Dean Curry.

In the 24th minute former Institute man Joe McCreadie danced his way past a few tackles but his effort was saved by Gallagher.

There was a warning for the visitors eleven minutes later when McClelland’s header was saved from Gareth Tommons free-kick.

Limavady took the lead in the 39th minutes as those two again combined from another free-kick with McClelland’s header being deflected in.

On the stroke of half-time it was almost two; McCreadie broke quickly on the right, crossed for Friel who initial shot was saved plus his weak follow-up was gathered as well.

The Roesiders continued to press at the start of the second period as well; Friel’s show was tipped wide, from the resultant corner his header was deflected inches wide.

In the 52nd minute they did double their lead; Friel’s shot didn’t look like it would trouble Gallagher but the keeper somehow fumbled the ball between his legs.

Stute did create a chance in the 60th minute but sub Shane McGinty couldn’t get on the end of the Jamie Dunn’s cross. McCreadie, in his best performance in a United shirt so far, playing in Friel with a wonderful ball with the outside of his foot but the striker dragged his effort wide.

Institute were reduced to ten men in the 77th minute when Dunn picked up a second yellow card, this one was for simulation.

United capitalised on their man advantage four minute later when Friel burst through only to be upended by Curry; the striker dusted himself down before sending Gallagher the wrong way from the penalty spot.

In stoppage time the hosts were also reduced to ten men when Logue picked up his second booking in the space of three minutes.
