Inver Reds fall at the first hurdle

Larne fell at the first hurdle in this season’s IRN-BRU League Cup when they went down 1-0 to Glebe Rangers at the Riada Stadium last night.

The defeat means Tommy Kincaid’s men miss out on a tie against the holders, Crusaders, in the next round.

In a poor first-half, Andy Simms twice went close for the visitors and Sammy Devine wasted a good chance shooting into the arms of Brian Kane in the home goal.

Larne were left with it all to do when Glebe took the lead 18 minutes in, with Thomas Elder providing the finishing touch.

Brian McClean and Craig Todd were thrown into the fray in place of Gary Workman and Niall McAllister in the hope of salvaging something from the game.

It wasn’t to be, however, and it will be a big blow for the Reds who scored seven against Glebe in two league games last season.

Next up for Larne is the scheduled league game at home to Newry City on Saturday which looks more and more unlikely to go ahead.

Speaking to The Times on Tuesday, a source close to the border club said he was unaware of any information outstanding to the IFA. All parties involved were still involved in various discussions but he was not optimistic of a quick resolution.

Larne: Keenan, S. Todd, Lemon, Marsh, Moore, Berry, Workman, Devine, Maguire, McAllister, Simms. Subs: C. Todd (Workman), Young, McClean (McAllister), Gibbons.
