IRISH LEAGUE: Deery happy with another away win

Institute manager Kevin Deery was full of praise after their hard fought win at Loughgall, on Saturday.

Deery felt his defence and goalkeeper Marty Gallagher were immense and dealt with virtually everything the home side threw at them.

“You could see the pressure from set-pieces, the deliveries were very good and I felt it was desperately unlucky, as no one really lost their marker,” he said.

“Stevie (O’Donnell) has gone and challenged him (Richard Copeland) and he just out-jumped him but that happens in football, so there isn’t any criticism for anyone.

“But we were right at it in terms of our battling qualifies again.

“That’s all you ask out of our players to show that every week and if we had haven’t drawn then you would have been disappointed because of the effort the players had put in, but I felt our qualities was always more than our oppositions and we deserved the three points.”

The Stute gaffer has been impressed by his team’s bounce back ability, collecting nine points from their last three games away from Drumahoe.

“After the game on the pitch we spoke about the drastic result where we lost away at Larne, we have now won three games in a row away from and I think out of our last six games we have 15 points out of 18,” he added.

“We just have a real hunger about us at the minute and while I keep searching for something to keep them motivated, but they are doing it themselves now, which is a dream as a coach or a manager.

“We can see that the boys have the hunger and it’s not about me or my assistant being hungry, they just know what it takes to try and get us out of this league; but it’s really tough and you need a wee bit of luck as well.”

Winger Stephen Curry has scored five goals in Stute’s last three league games on the road, much to boss Deery’s delight.

“Stephen’s two goals were fantastic,” said the Drumahoe club’s manager.

“The play for the first one, with Michael McCrudden’s outside of the foot pass to set him up was super.

“We keep talking about this but Stevie Curry’s desire to get in there and score goals, is why we signed him and why we felt he would add something to the team.

“He’s an old fashioned winger, he’s direct and wants to go at people, so he’s definitely an option for us in that role and he’s starting to score the goals for which we signed him for.”
