Having lost to Eddie Hill’s men three times last season - conceding nine goals - Irvine believes Larne owe them one. “They were hungrier in all three games and they knew how to beat us. Not only were they quickest to the second ball, they were also quickest to the third ball,” he said.

Irvine (inset), who grew up in Ballyclare, took a lot of stick after those defeats and is looking forward to returning the favour. “I hate losing and had to turn my phone off after those matches so I want to be the one sending the text messages this time. Those defeats still stick with me and it’s important we get our league campaign off to a winning start and it would be great to do it against the Comrades.”

The 29-year-old says all the ingredients are in place for a successful season at Inver and believes a place in the top-flight is within reach .

“I would really love to get promoted this season. We saw in some games last season that we were a match for anyone but we need to be more consistent if we are going to be serious challengers. The manager has installed a great attitude in the dressing room and everyone knows what is expected of them,” he added.
