It's no time to be feeling sorry for ourselves says Glens boss

Gary Haveron says there's no point in his Glentoran players feeling sorry for themselves as they bid to turn around what has become a depressing slump in form.

Saturday’s defeat at Coleraine means The Oval outfit have won only once in their last 13 league games.

They have now dropped into ninth place in the table, but Haveron is determined not to give up on seventh place just yet.

“While there are points available we will continue to compete for them, we want to try and finish as high up the table as we possibly can,” he said.

“We knew we need a change of fortune from how things have been going recently and also on to next season, we have been working very hard to make sure we are prepared come the end of the season.

“But that’s not to say we are going to give up in the remaining games this season, we have to keep going and try and get as many points as possible.

“There’s no easy games in this league, especially when the results aren’t going for you.

“Momentum is massive, when it’s going for you it’s great, but when it’s going against you it’s hard to turn around.

“We have to dig in and turn this around, there’s no point people feeling sorry for themselves in that dressing room, it won’t get us anywhere.

“As I said we have to keep working hard and try and get as many points on board from now until the end of the season.”

The Glens huffed and puffed for large spells at The Showgrounds on Saturday without causing the home side too many problems.

They were eventually undone by in-form marksmen Eoin Bradley and Jamie McGonigle who scored in either half.

Bradley converted from the spot after Marcus Kane was adjudged to have brought him down.

It was one of a number of decisions from referee Evan Boyce which the visitors disputed, and their frustration bubbled over near the end as Eric Foley was shown a straight red for dissent, while six other Glens men were shown yellow.

“It’s very disappointing as a number of decisions went against us today,” said Haveron.

“Frustration got the better of the players near the end. I’m not happy with it, especially when a players gets sent off because of it, but when you’re constantly on the receiving end of poor decisions it’s only natural to feel a sense of frustration.

“The refereeing decisions today leave me baffled. Davy Kee committed countless fouls today but didn’t get booked, yet the ref dishes out yellow cards to our boys like confetti.

“I seriously think it needs looking at.”

While Glentoran continue to toil Coleraine march on. Saturday’s victory was their tenth in the last eleven games.

They have closed the gap on third placed Cliftonville to a single point now, and although they might not have been at their best on Saturday Oran Kearney was pleased to see his side pick up all three points.

“That’s the maturity we are looking for,” said the Bannsiders boss.

“Everyone knows it wasn’t going to be that type of performance like last week, it was one to grind out.

“But in some ways they are the more pleasurable ones, and for the young lads it’s a great experience for them to come through and it will stand them in good stead for the future.

“We weren’t at our best, it certainly wasn’t up there with one of our best performances of this season, but I think more than anything else we kept them at bay, Chris (Johns) certainly didn’t have a big amount to do, and we got our goals at the right time,” added Kearney.
