It’s results that matter, says Hill

Following another inept display, Ballyclare Comrades’ manager Eddie Hill is looking forward to the January transfer window to freshen up the squad.

“I know that I have a strong squad, with one of the most talented benches in Championship 1, but it’s results that count and we aren’t getting them,” he fumed.

“Against Donegal Celtic we just didn’t perform, and they were deserved winners, but our players will have to have a good long look at themselves,” he said.

“When I looked at the team sheets on Saturday before kick-off it was clear to me that, player for player, we were stronger than Donegal Celtic. Perhaps some of the players were thinking along the same lines and we paid the penalty for complacency.

“It’s my job to pin-point the failings and put matters right, so I will be thinking long and hard before selecting Saturday’s team to return to the same venue for the Irish Cup tie.

“Perhaps the thought of lining out against some of the Premiership sides in the next round will be motivation enough to spark our lads into top gear, but there will definitely be changes,” he insisted.

Quizzed about the fringe players who have been waiting to get the call-up, Hill continued: “I can’t praise the lads on the bench enough; they have been very patient and loyal to the club, so I assure them that they have not been forgotten.

“For Saturday’s Irish Cup tie, Denver Gage is obviously suspended, but Chris Getty comes into the equation.

“Chris Trussell has lost his goal-a-game touch, but I hope he is mentally strong enough to cope with this and start banging in the goals in the second half of the season.”

He added: “We have this Irish Cup tie against Donegal Celtic and another one in the Intermediate Cup at home against Bryansburn Rangers a week later, to get ourselves in to shape for the second half of the league campaign.”
