Jason tipped for bigger things

The 15-year-old, a pupil at Craigavon Senior High School, made his first team debut at right back last Saturday and put in an impressive display beyond his years. Hamilton was delighted with his performance and also praised his attitude after the game.

“I’ve no doubt that he’ll get a move somewhere this summer,” said the Glenavon manager.

“He’ll go far because it’s noticeable that he is one of the players who takes notice of every bit of information. If Jason isn’t the best under 15 defender in the country, he’s certainly in the top three.

“For anyone of that age to play the way Jason did for us on Saturday is a credit to him. It shows the other young players at the club that anyone playing well will get their chance. It’s very encouraging to the other lads seeing the likes of Jason and Brendan Bennett getting into the team.

“We’re not afraid to play our younger players. Jason has been one of the better players for the reserves in recent weeks so he got his chance. His confidence has risen from playing in the reserves this season and he has stood out.

“Hopefully Jason won’t disappoint if he gets another chance because we’d have no fear of putting him into the team again.”

The boss also failed to rule out Greenaway staying in the side for Saturday’s trip to Coleraine although did say it depended on the fitness of the experienced Eddie McCallion.

He said: “Jason didn’t do anything wrong but he’s just 15 and if you look at any footballers, they don’t play four or five consecutive first team games at that age.

“If Eddie McCallion comes through the reserve game on Wednesday night, he will play because he’s the type of player you need in your side. If Eddie doesn’t come through it though, Jason will play.”

Greenaway himself says he wants to hold his place and was pleased with his debut performance.

He said: “Hopefully I’ll stay in the side. I’d be happy and confident enough to stay in it.

“It’s a big step up from the reserves and it’s tough but it’s good to get my debut already.

“I thought I did okay for my first time. I was happy enough and thought I did well. It was a tough game on Saturday but we should have won it. They had some good chances but we had the better ones and we should have taken them.”
