Junior football makes a return

THE weather was once again the winner as four of the scheduled five Irish Junior Cup games were called off.

The one that did beat the weather saw Ardmore bow out 4-3 at home to Greencastle Rovers.

The other four clubs must now give up home advantage this Saturday as per the rules which will make life a lot more difficult for them, the second round of the Matt Morrison Junior Cup is also scheduled for Saturday.

Aghadowey v Tullyally Colts

The home side play in the Coleraine and District league, they have an all local side and they are always difficult to beat at home, reportedly to be a big physical side.

The Colts main aim is promotion but they usually do well in cup competitions, they to are an all local side, this may need extra time and maybe penalties.

Prediction: Tullyally Colts.

Newtowne v Upperlands

Another clash between teams from different leagues, the Limavady men are strong favourites to go all the way and if they continue the form they showed before the break they may do just that.

The visitors couldn't have picked a tougher draw however as we have seen in cup competitions in England there can always be a shock not here though.

Prediction: Newtowne.

Donemana v Drummond

The Tyrone men are having a decent season, still in with a chance for promotion, they are a well organised outfit who would dearly love to take the scalp of a premier League side.

Drummond are having an alright season but they need a cup run, this could see plenty of goals with the Limavady men going through.

Prediction: Drummond.

Park v Ballykelly

Two sides who were big players in the Premier Division a number of years ago, now they both play in the lower Divisions. The home side are rebuilding and things are beginning to look up.

Ballykelly continue to struggle in the Second Division having lost a number of players in recent seasons.

Prediction: Park.

Irish Street v Burnfoot

Irish Street have made a good impression since their formation which is a credit to their management team, they have some promising young players in their ranks which augurs well for the future.

The visitors have recently returned to the North West League and they are finding it a bit of a struggle as results haven't been that good.

Prediction: Irish Street.

Eglinton v Liverpool Supporters Club

The visitors have a very good record in this competition, they are based in Coleraine and have a settled side who are playing well something that can't be said about their namesakes in England.

The villagers like everyone else are just hoping to get back playing, they suffer a bit of inconsistency but are capable on their day.

Prediction: Liverpool Supporters Club.

Roe Rovers v BBOB

This all Premiership clash is a difficult one to call, Rovers showed a bit of an improvement before the break which saw them move up the table, they seem to reserve their best form for cup competitions.

The Old Boys can only hope for a big improvement in the second half of the season, they had a torrid time before the Christmas break; this one may go to penalties.

Prediction: BBOB.

Irish Junior Cup

St. Patrick's v Foyle Wanderers

The men from Magheramason have done well to reach this stage and their manager Wayne Glenn has worked wonders in his first season in charge, although promotion is their main aim they would love to go all the way in this competition.

Their opponents play in Division two C of the amateur league and currently sit second in the table having lost just once and now with the tie switching to St Patrick's the Wanderers may find it hard to progress.

Prediction: St Patrick's.

Lurgan Institute v Maghera Strollers

The Strollers are a formidable side at home, but they have now lost that advantage, so it's going to be a difficult tie now. Their form in the league has been patchy but when they are at full strength they are capable of beating anyone.

The Lurgan men play in the second division of the Mid Ulster League where they are in the bottom half of the table, they may bow out.

Prediction: Lurgan Institute.

Dungannon Rovers v Sion Swifts

Sion have already knocked out a few fancied sides in earlier rounds, they are a very well organised out fit who train regularly, they have a number of promising youngsters in their ranks who may move to senior clubs.

The visitors play in the First Division of the competitive Mid Ulster League where they are currently fourth in the table having lost just twice.

Prediction: Sion Swifts.

Barrowfield v Lincoln Courts

There is a doubt about this game as Barrowfield who defeated Shelbourne 8-2 in the last round may have played ineligible players; if the game goes ahead they will be a difficult side to beat they ply their trade in the Fermanagh and Western second division.

The Courts are one of the top sides in Junior football and are capable of going all the way, they are scoring plenty of goals and have match winners throughout the side.

Prediction: Lincoln Courts.
