The 25-year-old put pen-to-paper on a one-and-a-half year deal with the Bannsiders at the weekend much to the delight of Bannsiders boss Oran Kearney.

“Eugene is a player who has been on our radar for a while now, he trained with us a few times in the summer before rejoining Derry, but he feels it’s time for a new challenge now,” Kearney told Times Sport.

“He has been number two to Gerard Doherty for a while, but he has a lot of experience. If he was at any other club he would probably be number one.

“With a new manager coming on board there are obviously going to be changes so guys like Eugene and David McDaid have decided to move on to pastures new.

“We are delighted to benefit from this. These guys are top players who will definitely add to our squad.”

Kearney is hopeful Ferry and McDaid will receive their international clearance in time for Saturday’s home game against Ards. The Bannsiders boss is also hoping to bring in a couple more new faces during the window.

“We are definitely low on numbers and low on and low on quality,” he said. When you look at our bench against Ballymena we were down to the absolute bare bones due to injury and the unavailability of players.

“We need to strengthen in January and we will be strengthening.”
