This time last year the striker was about to start off on his journey to the Premiership. After a successful season with junior side Ballybogey McLaughlin went straight into a fitness drive to get in shape and it has certainly paid off.

“It’s a fantastic return for James,” Kearney told Times Sport.

“I think if you had offered us all 20 goals from James this season we would have bitten your arm off.

“It’s a credit to him. He started his work for this season back in May last year to try and get weight off him.

“He did that and has worked very hard all season long.

“It’s a credit to him and him only that he has got to 20 goals, which is fantastic at this level, whether it be your first season or your tenth.

“He has been a big help for us this season and hopefully next year with a wee bit more work over the summer he’ll get fitter and stronger again and the goals will keep flowing.”

Coleraine travel to Linfield this Saturday for their next Premiership game.
