Kee baffled by finishing as Rangers keeper shines

INSTITUTE manager Paul Kee was happy his side booked their place in the League Cup third round, following a comfortable 2-0 win over Glebe Rangers, on Monday night.

However the Drumahoe man wasn’t happy with the display from his players and he was bitterly disappointed that they only managed to find the net twice, after making a host of clear cut opportunities throughout the 90 minutes, with striker Darren McFadden unable to keep his goalscoring run going as he failed to take his chances.

“I don’t know what to say about our finishing to be honest,” stated Kee.

“To tell you the truth I would be better saying nothing and you should maybe ask the players about their finishing.

“Look we won the game and we are in the hat for the next round, but there’s no point in me going on about anything good, bad or indifferent because it isn’t going to do anybody any good, the team, myself, the supporters, the committee, but as I said the most important thing is that we are through to the next round.

“But everything you do you have to do with a certain quality, understanding and cutting edge and at times that should have been a lot better tonight.”

Kee was also full of praise for Rangers’ never say die attitude, which keeper Lewis McIlveen showed throughout to deservedly pick up the man of the match tag.

“In fairness to them, they got about eight blocks in and had ten men behind the ball. But we told the players at the start, Glebe are a spirited team, a country team and it means something to play for their shirt and that’s what they did and their keeper got man of the match.

“But I don’t think they had a shot on target in the whole game, so while that’s all positive, the reality is if you are playing in these games and you want to progress as a team, you bury them.

“Should we have scored more goals, yes, but as I have said the most important thing was to get into the next round and hopefully we’ll be playing a Premier League team, at home and getting a good draw out of it and that’s the most important thing.”

Despite his frustration, Kee was pleased with defender Stephen O’Donnell, who marked his debut with a goal, while young striker Robbie Hume, who also scored, is starting to show glimpse’s of his old self.

“Stephen did well, he didn’t let himself down, he scored on his debut and helped the team keep a clean-sheet, so you can’t ask for much more,” explained the ’Stute boss.

“He’s headed the ball consistently and I was very pleased with him, while Robbie had a sharp match against Glebe.

“He gave himself a good opportunity of playing again on Friday night against Tobermore, because he’s been a good work in progress and he’s starting to look like the player he was when he was 16 years old, a good talented schoolboy player and he’s going in the right direction for the team and himself, which is good.”
