Kee disappointed with display

NSTITUTE manager Paul Kee admitted Saturday’s Irish Cup win over Rathfriland Rangers wasn’t the best his side has played this season.

Kee also felt that some of his players maybe took the amateur side lightly and because of that his players didn’t perform to the best of their abilities.

“I told the players after the game, yes we haven’t done as well, but we learn from it and we don’t underestimate opponents, which some of the players did unfortunately, but the most important thing is that we are through,” stated Kee.

“We didn’t get any real momentum going on Saturday and when we did create a couple of chances we didn’t take them.

“In fairness to them we limited Rathfriland to maybe set-pieces and maybe a break away and I told the players at half-time to guard against that, because despite having a lot of possession we weren’t really effective with it.

“To be fair we kept trying and we kept plugging away but it wasn’t a performance that I would be fully happy with and because of that I have asked the players to learn from Saturday’s performance, so hopefully we can learn from it.

“Unfortunately that little bit of complacency existed whether we liked it or lumped it.”

The Drumahoe club for long periods just huffed and puffed but couldn’t score that all important third goal, which in the end the ’Stute boss felt would have eventually knocked the stuffing out of Rangers.

“We had a couple of chances, we had a couple of headers or passes not getting through to people, then wee Robbie (Hume) missed one, if we had have scored a third goal the game was effectively over, as it would have broken their resolve but we just couldn’t get the third goal.

“When it went to 2-1 it gave them a bit of impetus and keeps them in the game, that’s what they did, they kept going and they tried to get an equaliser in fairness to them and credit to them because they kept going.”

Unfortunately after Marty Gallagher’s two mistakes during their recent Intermediate Cup win over Knockbreda, it was the turn of Corey Wilson to make a major mistake which resulted in Rathfriland scoring on Saturday.

Despite these mistakes in ’Stute’s last two games, Kee remains confident his two keepers will come good in the long run.

“It’s a big month for us coming up and we need two keepers to be on top form,” he added.

“Corey took two crosses late in the game, which was good, but both Marty and Corey are still learning a lot about the game.

“Marty is 22 and Corey is a teenager and if you rolled the two of them into one you would get a really, really good keeper, because Marty’s distribution and back pass play is brilliant and Corey has got good athleticism and is good at crosses, but I just have to continue to review all the playing situation, because we have a healthy squad but we do need to strengthen.

“However it’s getting players in that want to come and play, players who we can afford because there isn’t a lot of money out here.”

Kee also wasn’t happy with striking duo Stephen Parkhouse and Warren Mullan, even though the pair got themselves on the score-sheet.

“To be honest I didn’t think their movement was good in the first half and that was one of the things I said at half-time, I thought both Parky and Warren were too static when our back four got the ball .

“They moved a wee bit better in the second half and in fairness to them they got a goal each, which is good.”
