Kee happy after UUJ test

INSTITUTE’S Head of Development Paul Kee believes last weekend’s Coca/Cola Intermediate Cup win at UUJ was a good test for his players.

He was a little disappointed that not for the first time this season ’Stute lacked a decisive touch in the final third, but he also admitted they were always in control of the tie, so much so that keeper Martin Gallagher didn’t have a single shot to save in the 90 minutes.

“In fairness to the boys they (UUJ) are a young side who showed great spirit and were well organised, but I don’t think Marty Gallagher had a shot to save in the entire game, but in saying that it was a good test for the boys,” explained Kee.

“It was one of those games that the opposition were going to sit in with two banks of four and try to hit us on the counter-attack, but they never really threatened us for the entire 90 minutes, however because it finished 1-0, that meant they always had hope of getting an equaliser.

“I feel if we could have scored a second goal then it would have been an easier day for ourselves, but they had us watched and they have a few experienced players like Kyle Ferguson, who played at the back for them and that helped them.

“But they were a young side who all worked their socks off and because of that it was definitely a good work out for us, but we again didn’t take our chances.

“No disrespect to UUJ but we should have a bit more quality in the final third to break them down and score more goals, but that has been a problem all season and something, which we’ll continue to work at both in training and in games.”

The Northern Ireland Under 17 boss was also full of praise for young striker Darren McFadden, who came off the bench to score the all important goal and his all round play was something, which also pleased Kee.

“Darren did very well whenever he came on, he’s a big striker who has a good touch and is aggressive and he made life difficult for them.

“He took his goal well and he had a few chances before he scored, but considering he’s only back from a bad injury he did very well.”
