The ’Stute gaffer believes the win in the Coca/Cola Intermediate Cup can maintain his side’s promotion push.

“The players went about their jobs efficiently,” he stated.

“We created chances and both O’Flynn and McCrudden scored two which was good, because those two players are getting some good goals for us at the minute.

“That’s ten matches now out of eleven that we’ve got something out of. You have to keep momentum at this time of the year and that’s what we did.

“It got us another game. If you’re not in it, you weren’t playing and we would have had to organise a friendly game or training.

“You have to keep competitive at this stage of the season. Whilst not essential it gets us another game and gives us an opportunity to get players games like Ryan Semple, Stephen Parkhouse and Gary Henderson.”

The Drumahoe man was also happy his players didn’t get involved in anything stupid and didn’t let their emotions get the better of them, something which he attempts did happen in the last meeting in the North West Senior Cup Final.

That night midfielder Aaron Walsh stupidly got sent-off.

“It was a derby match and we had to make sure we played the game rather than the occasion first,” he added.

“We had to look after Newbuildings and then look after our emotions; we didn’t want anyone getting sent off so credit to the players.

“We saw a good character-building exercise against Crumlin Star when we were 2-1 down and we came back and won 3-2, and we showed some good character against Newbuildings, so that sets us up well for the next match against Bangor.

’Stute’s second goal just after the half-hour mark from Michael McCrudden was an outstanding team goal, which only had three passes and involved Darren McCauley, Stephen Parkhouse and the midfielder.

“It was a great goal, three passes and it was in the net, it doesn’t get much better than that,” he added.

“It was a good response to what we had to do in the first half. We won the first half 3-0 and the second half 1-0 which is a good testament to the players, because it’s all about character and digging in and effort at this stage of the season.

“We play good, attractive football; we play a good counter attacking game and we have good athletes on the pitch. Newbuildings got a bit of momentum and tried to get back into the game but we stopped them which was good because it was important that we got a clean sheet.”
