Kee unhappy after win

INSTITUTE’S Head of Development Paul Kee didn’t know whether to be happy or angry, after his side’s Coca/Cola Intermediate Cup quarter-final victory, over Ards Rangers, on Saturday.

The Drumahoe club were crusing to a 3-0 victory when disaster struck in the final few minutes and they conceded two goals in quick succession and nearly let-in a third in stoppage time, much to Kee’s frustration.

“From having total control of the game and to do what we did is if I’m to be honest unacceptable,” admitted Kee.

“It’s really disappointing and it has soured the game for me, because from having total control of the game and then go from one extreme to another is unacceptable and it’s not good.

“I just said to the boys at half-time that the concentration levels has to be far far better and then at the end that just epitomised it, we were three up and in total control and we just didn’t deal with bog standard root one ball and that’s disappointing.

“To be honest they (Ards Rangers) could have scored two or three times, after they scored their second goal, but the concentration levels this season have been poor.”

The Waterside man did praise his players that their tremendous run in cup competitions continues.

“We have another win and we are in the semi-final now and we are one step away from another final,” he added.

“I think we have lost two cup ties all season, at Ballinamallard in the Irn Bru Cup and Donegal Celtic in the Irish Cup, so we have got good pedigree in the cup this year, which is pleasing.

“However conceding two late goals in the matter in which we did is very disappointing, in saying that we controlled most of the game apart from the last 10-15 minutes where we switched off.

“I’m pleased that we have reached the semi-final and that’s a credit to the players.”

The Intermediate Cup has special memories for both ’Stute and Kee himself.

“The Intermediate Cup is the main competition at this level and it has a good tradition.

“The club has won it in the past and I can remember whenever my Dad (Billy) was manager they got into the final whenever I was a child, so it’s something that means dear to me and it means dear to the club and I have told the players to respect that and that is what we done on Saturday.

“We gave Ards Rangers respect and I think they gave us a good game, but I’m just pleased that we have won the game and reached the semi-final.

“We had them watched a couple of weeks ago and I told the players that they were a big physical side and they never let up and at times there tackling was a bit strong, but we expected that and we deal with it and got on with it and thankfully we kept our cool and didn’t get anybody sent-off, which is pleasing.”
